Hon. Stephen A. Mather, Asst. to the Secretary of the Interior, Washington, D.C. (Through Col. L. M. Brett, Act. Supt., Yellowstone Nat.Park.) Dear Sir: In compliance with your request, made while in Yellowstone Park recently, that I submit to you through Colonel Brett, my views as to the practicability of using motor cars, or motor cars in connection with stages, for the transporting of tourists through Yellowstone National Park, the following is respectfully submitted: After careful consideration of this subject I have come to the conclusion that it would not be practicable to operate motor cars in conjunction with stages, for the following reasons: 1. The business would not warrant the investment and expense necessary to maintain the two separate equipments; 2. There would be two different classes of employees, naturally and by employment antagonistic, and therefore difficult to manage; 3. The traveling public would strenuously object to being trans- ferred from motor cars to the more slowly moving stages. It has been demonstrated, this season, that the operation of motor cars in the Park is practicable. However, the roads, in ----- new page (MSS7635_p002.jpg) ( ) the Park, have been built with a view of accomodating horse-drawn vehicles and, of course, are not so well adapted to the use of motor cars, except the improvements made recently on the approaches to the circle, from the various entrances; these are excellent for motor traffic. Basing an opinion on the experience of cars in the Park this season, it would seem that until the roads have been made standard, cars of small capacity and high power would be likely to give the most satisfactory results, in a transfer company. There probably would be some difficulty with motor cars, as there is with stages, during the early part of the season, in passing over the divides between the Upper Basin and the Lake, due to the fact that the snow usually remains in this section of the road until after the tourist season opens. This difficulty can be obviated by returning the tourists from the Upper Basin via Norris to the Canyon. The same conditions regarding snow, in the early part of the season, prevail in Dunraven Pass, but the tourists can be taken to Mammoth Hot Springs via Norris, as is now necessary with the stages. The following MOTOR CAR SCHEDULE, for the Park Tour, from Yellowstone, the Western Entrance, is submitted. Miles Leave - Yellowstone, Western Entrance 8:00 A M Arrive - Old Faithful Inn, Upper Geyser Basin 11:30 A M 30 Leave - Old Faithful Inn, Upper Geyser Basin 8:00 A M Arrive - Colonial Hotel, Yellowstone Lake 12:00 M 34 Leave - Colonial Hotel, Yellowstone Lake 2:00 P M Arrive - Grand Canyon Hotel, via Artist Point 4:00 P M 20 Leave - Grand Canyon Hotel, via Dunraven Pass 8:00 A M Arrive - Mammoth Hotel, Mammoth Hot Springs 11:30 A M 36 Leave - Mammoth Hotel, via Norris 2:00 P M Arrive - Yellowstone, Western Entrance 6:00 P M 47 ———— 167 ----- new page (MSS7635_p003.jpg) ( ) This schedule provides for a regular three day trip through the park, affording the tourist an opportunity to visit all the principal points of interest. It allows the tourist to remain over night at Old Faithful Inn and the Canyon Hotel - the two most attractive hotels in the park, and located near the most important objects of interest. This schedule would enable the tourist, in three days, to see the park more thoroughly than he can, in five days, with the present stage schedule. Parties desiring short trips, or side trips, could be provided with special cars. The trip to the summit of Mt. Washburn should not be included in the regular schedule. It should be made only as a side trip from the Canyon, in favorable weather. If desired, I should be glad to submit a proposition for the transportation of tourists through Yellowstone Park, as out- lined above, and would be pleased to consult with you in Washington, regarding the details. Yours truly, Pres. and Treas. ----- new page (MSS7635_p004.jpg) St. Paul, Minn., May 1, 1916. Copy filed with The Honorable Lease Secretary of the Interior, Washington, D. C.
